PHP4 to be discontinued end of year

Its been 3 years since the first release of PHP 5, and it was surprising to see that as of last month the penetration for PHP 5 was still floating around 15% (source http://www.nexen.ne). That’s a hell of a lot of PHP 4 development still going on! Myself included (did i say that out loud?). Many hosting providers and popular applications like WordPress are still widely supporting 4, but be weary, with the discontinuation of 4 there’s going to be a lot of rewriting and migration going on (FYI Migration Guide). Gees i hate updates!

  1. Very happy for this change. Very Very. We now almost only work with PHP5 syntax. Discontinuing PHP4 will allow the language to evolve properly and put an end to the poorer coding standards. Shame that it will upset a lot of people, but at the rate that the language is being adjusted for enterprise, and Zend’s push for finally establishing some decent library/frameworks it is necessary! :-)

  2. This is the thing with PHP, its a very flexible and powerful language, and they’ve been very careful with backwards compatibility, but in doing so there also seems to be a lack of standards and progression. Yes, so hopefully with the appearance of the Zend Framework and Borland’s new PHP Development based tools we see some sort of enterprise development!
